Sewing is such a handy life skill and the freedom you get from being able to create your own wardrobe (outerwear and underwear) is enormous!

Join Helen for this class which will cover all the basics of sewing on a sewing machine to start creating the first two pieces in your handmade wardrobe.

Before booking, please read our Class Policies.

After purchasing your class you will be emailed a class handout with the full class details.

Class Details:

Skill Level: For those who have never touched a sewing machine through to those who know sewing machine basics but would like to learn garment sewing/dressmaking/lingerie basics.  13yrs of age and over.

Date/Time: Wednesdays evenings 6pm-9pm.  March 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th.

Location: Nellie Joans, 181 High Street, Eltham, Taranaki

Cost: The total cost of the four session class is $250 (inc GST.) and includes:

  • Experienced tutor
  • All fabric and notions required for both projects
  • A copy of both patterns in your size
  • Supper

You will need to provide:

  • A working sewing machine*
  • Basic sewing tools e.g. scissors, pins (a full list is provided with the class handout emailed on purchase of a class.)**

*There are two shop machines available to hire at $10 per session (i.e. for the duration of the four week class it would be $40.)  These are booked on a 'first in first served' basis. Please leave a note with your order if you wish to book. It is a good idea to bring/source your own machine as you can then become familiar with it and also practice sewing at home.

**You can purchase a basic sewing kit from Nellie Joans for the cost of $38 it includes: thread snips, clips x 10, pins (pack of 20,) pack of microtex needles, tape measure, quick unpick. Please leave a note with your order if you wish to purchase a kit.

Over four evenings we will work on two projects:

Scout Tee: This woven tee is a great wardrobe staple that covers women's sizes NZ 4-36.  (alternative pattern available if you want to sew menswear.)

You will learn:

  • Sewing machine basics - threading, basic techniques, sewing different stitches.
  • Pattern basics - how to take your measurements, how to read a pattern.
  • Pattern layout and cutting out the fabric.
  • Sewing up a basic woven pattern

Ivy Briefs/Kapunda Undies.  Lovely patterns for basic underwear with elevated details.  The Ivy covers sizes NZ 6-22 and the Kapunda hip circumference 105-182cm. (alternative pattern available if you want to sew menswear.)

You will learn:

  • An introduction to lingerie sewing - what fabrics and notions are required.
  • Pattern basics - how to take your measurements, how to read a pattern.
  • Pattern layout and cutting out the fabric.
  • Sewing knits and elastics.

With small class sizes you will have plenty of individual tutor time.  This class is focused on learning garment and lingerie sewing skills and not necessarily on producing two finished garments so our projects may not get completed but you will have the skills necessary to add finishing details outside of class time and the confidence to tackle further projects.

A class minimum is four students for the class to go ahead.
