Class (in person) ~ How to sew: an Underwire bra
Interested in sewing your own bra but a little but daunted to start?...
Sewing your own bras is a fun and practical hobby!
Join Helen for this class which will cover 'how to sew' an underwire bra using the Freja pattern by Pin Up Girls. The Freja is a full band bra with a three-piece cup and plenty of options to vary the style. This pattern covers a wide range of sizes.

Class Details:
Skill Level: Strong beginner upwards. You must be confident in using a sewing machine to sew basic straight and zig-zag stitches and have sewn from a pattern before.
Date/Time: There are two weekend sessions available. 27th + 28th April or the 1st + 2nd June. Classes run from 9am - 2.45pm both days (with 45 minutes allowed for breaks.)
Location: Nellie Joans, 181 High Street, Eltham, Taranaki
Cost: The total cost of the weekend class is $250 (inc GST.) and includes:
- Experienced tutor
- All fabric and notions required to make one bra
- A copy of the pattern.
- Morning tea and lunch
You will need to provide:
- A working sewing machine*
- Basic sewing tools e.g. scissors, pins (a full list is provided with the class handout emailed on purchase of a class.)**
*There are two shop machines available to hire at $10 per session (i.e. for the duration of the four week class it would be $40.) These are booked on a 'first in first served' basis. Please contact us to book. It is a good idea to bring/source your own machine as you can then become familiar with it and also practice sewing at home.
**You can purchase a basic sewing kit from Nellie Joans for the cost of $38 it includes: thread snips, clips x 10, pins (pack of 20,) pack of microtex needles, tape measure, quick unpick.
You will learn:
- An introduction to lingerie sewing - what fabrics and notions are required.
- Pattern basics - how to take your measurements, how to read a pattern.
- How to find your perfect underwire.
- Pattern layout and cutting out the fabric.
- Step by step sewing an underwire bra.
With small class sizes you will have plenty of individual tutor time. This class is focused on 'how to sew' an underwire bra and not necessarily 'how to fit' an underwire bra. If there is time at the end of class we can discuss any fit issues. You may need to make a couple more bras in order to perfect the fit.
A class minimum is six students for the class to go ahead.
